How to plan your life

Introduction

“We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” Joseph Campbell

You may think the quote above is not the best start to a book entitled Plan your Life. After all, having a plan for our lives implies a conscious intention on our part to define and pursue a set of objectives. What you will discover as you read, however, is that the key is to be found in the very process of planning and not in the plan itself.

It is true that not everyone feels that they need a Life Plan. Perhaps you are someone who likes to be spontaneous and leave the course of your life to chance or serendipity. Or you may be the self-motivated, highly driven individual with specific personal and professional goals. Whichever camp you belong to, this book will adequately provide some structure for your personal and professional development.

This book came about as a result of working with clients in my practice as a Life Coach. Although we may have a goal that we want to achieve in a particular area, I found that a good percentage of my clients would have benefited firstly from creating a Life Plan. Having the opportunity to explore one's life - to examine it - is a tremendously helpful tool in dealing with different areas in which we may need coaching.

Life Coaching is often described as non-directive, especially as a means of differentiating it from other types of support. However, you may find the tone used here rather direct. That is intentional. This is because clarity and focus are key in gaining real success for any goal. So there are many questions, often challenging, but all are designed to help you begin the process of change.

You may never feel the need to engage the services of a coach, but with this book you will develop a greater level of self-knowledge, examine your beliefs, act differently and therefore produce better results. You will become your own coach.
