7 compelling reasons to go back to school

Tweet me!

It's September and this month is synonymous with learning: it's back to school for kids; it's the month most University terms begin and queues of Lifelong learners register for short courses in the evenings. Why should you consider going back to school?

Here are 7 great reasons!

Increase your self confidence. When you are learning new things, new horizons are opening up in your mind. You feel better about yourself and your ability to achieve. After all, if you can learn one thing, you can learn more! True genuine self confidence is something that we all can use more of; investing in your education and learning will add to your storehouse of self confidence.

Reach your goals. There is a learning component within every goal, large or small. As you learn more in the focused areas related to our goals and aspirations, you are able to move towards achieving them more rapidly. Investing in education in support of your goals is one of the best things you can do to increase the likelihood that you will reach – and even exceed – them.

Have more fun. When you are reaching your goals and feeling more confident don`t you think you are going to have more fun? You can invest in learning anything! Want to learn how to knit or ballroom dance or judge wines? Whatever your passion, learning opens up new opportunities to enjoy them even more.

Improve your attitude. Human beings are – by design – learning beings. When we are doing the things that make us most human (including learning) we naturally are more upbeat and positive. When you are learning things that help move you towards your goals, will you likely be more positive and optimistic? You bet!

Increase your momentum. Momentum is a powerful thing. As the rock rolls down the hill and picks up speed, it becomes more powerful and able to overcome the obstacles in its way much easier. So it is for people too. Learn something, improve your confidence; learn something more and have a more positive attitude; learn something new and you thirst for more. As you continue to learn your learning momentum grows, as does the momentum of your success. A perfect reason to never stop learning!

Increase your earning power. One of the most reliable related factors to financial success is a person`s willingness to learn, and willingness to invest in learning.

Reach your potential. Deep inside all of us (especially as our self confidence becomes healthier) is a desire to move closer and closer to our potential – to becoming the person we were meant to be. No other single action will tip the scales towards you reaching your potential more than continuing to invest in yourself as a learner.

To be sure, these seven reasons are inter-related; as you realize one, you are likely recognizing others – maybe all of them – simultaneously.

Do you really need a Life Coach?

Tweet me!

The simple answer to that is NO.

You don’t need a life coach, because you don’t need to CHANGE.

It is perfectly fine to continue to live your life as you do now; in fact it is a bit of a nuisance

when people are always asking you to improve or work on one thing or the other.

Right?

What do they know about your life?

Exactly, that’s what I always say!

Why live the life you dream of?

Why have the body that you wish you had?

Why have the fulfilling relationships that you deserve?

Why sack your boss and start that business you have always wanted to?

Why improve your work life balance?

Why improve your communication skills?

Why create more time and get more organised?

Why be happy???

You don’t need a life coach!

But if you would like someone who would support you in designing the life you desire, help you gain clarity and focus so you can live life with renewed vitality give us a call.

We would love to hear from you. We promise not to nag.

What gets you up in the morning?

Tweet me!

I remember thinking about this once, and coming up with different answers at different times; probably depending on what side of the bed I got up from. Sometimes just the thought of getting up and having my first coffee, preferably with single cream (yes I know….its one of my guilty pleasures) puts an additional spring to my step. Other times something I may ask a more significant question like who I am going to meet that day, whose world I am going to intersect and hopefully change for the better?  Now this is not because I am so wonderful; although if you want to argue the point with me, do feel free, it’s because my main motivation in life is to help others along in their life journeys. I try to do this In whatever way I can. But that’s me.

How about you? What motivates you to get up in the morning? What energises and excites you about what lays ahead in your day. Perhaps this is a question you haven’t asked or taken time to answer. The subject of motivation is simple, yet complex. Simple in that it explains much of what we see in human behaviour. According to industrial psychologist Abraham Maslow, we are motivated to action by the basic needs: food, clothing, shelter, safety and security. Yet, it is complex when it poses contradictions. For instance why would a human rights activist chose to go on a starvation diet. They are motivated by a higher ideal than their need for food.

Motivation is different for everyone and so I love when Cathy Better says “Life is raw material. We are artisans. We can sculpt our existence into something beautiful or debase it into ugliness. It’s in our hands.” Whatever motivates you to get up in the morning, why don’t you sculpt your day into a beautiful one!

To thineself be true

Tweet me!

At one of our recent workshops, the question of authenticity came up. It was this idea that we owe it to ourselves, to be true and genuine, both in our approach to life and in our relationship to others.

Not too long ago, this was a real issue for me. I was searching for answers as to why I felt slightly disconnected from the life that I was leading. I remember speaking to someone about the disquiet I felt and they responded by saying how thankful I should have been for where I was. I felt like punching them! Of course I was thankful for where I was, I just knew there was more out there for me! I wrote a blog at the time (sadly it hasn’t been updated for a while) but it was on this very subject. It was called ‘Be Real’ and came from my own experiences of wanting to create a life that was wholly mine.

What does that mean? We are born with what some refer to as a blank slate, and then grow up with a life full of writing that has not been penned by our own hands. The thoughts of others; parents, teachers, siblings, peers, and even Mr Smith the next door neighbour, replace any thoughts that start forming in our minds. Therefore by the time we too are adults we have a life script of ideas, values and thoughts which come from many sources, and we are not sure which ones actually originate from us. Some of us then ask ‘Will the real me please stand up?’ I did.

Well the quest for authenticity starts with that very question. How do we separate the voices and values of others from our own? It starts by asking more questions unfortunately, but also having the courage to answer them. Ask yourself; are you happy with your results? Do you have flourishing relationships? Do you enjoy good health? Do you enjoy your work, or business? If you discover that you are not too pleased with the responses, chances are you living off a life script that’s not wholly yours. So start to examine the thought processes that got you the results you currently have. Then measure it by only one thing; do they work for you? Not other people, you.

Start the journey to find the real you. You’ll be glad you did.

Strategy

Tweet me!

Today at the 'Gift of Time' class, we are looking at Strategy. The word strategy is of military origin and refers to a plan of action that is designed to achieve a particular goal. As we all have different goals, no doubt each person will have a different approach to getting to  the desired results.

All goals when decided upon require focus and specificity on our part. We also have to take into account our reality, current circumstances, and the options available to us. A combination of these with our desire to achieve our objective is what will determine our success. Consider your goals.

State them in positive terms, what you want and not what you don’t.

Apply focus and specificity: When? Where? How? These questions will help create a picture and give more detail to the goal. When will this goal be achieved? Where will I be? What will I be doing? Who will I be with? How will I know when it has been achieved?

Determine your level of commitment. How much of yourself are you willing to give to reach this goal, whether it is time, dedication or money!

Is this goal within your scope of influence? For instance, you cannot have as a goal getting your spouse or a partner to act in a certain way. Your goal should instead be; to handle your responses to them appropriately. You have to have clear responsibility over your goal.

Examine the consequences. Is this goal in keeping with your values?

Taking action: Re-frame your goal. List the first few steps of your goal, and then do it! Because certain goals can only be reached be over a period of time, they need to be broken down into manageable and do-able chunks. The next stage is to review. All goals need to be periodically checked and tested for efficacy. There are different methods that are useful and can help speed up the process of change.
